About Dr. James Acken, Medievalist & Film Consultant

Dr. James Acken is a rogue scholar and creative expert. His journey has led him from the wildernesses of Appalachia, through darkest academia conducting manuscript research in European mythopoetic traditions, and into the Chapel Perilous of modern digital media.

After a decade in the classroom teaching medieval bestiaries, Arthurian tradition, comparative mythology, ancient languages, history and culture, he left to bring those traditions to the susceptible and fertile minds of popular audiences.

His expertise is rooted in Latin, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse mythology, history and literature, from the European Iron Age through the Middle Ages. His interest in long-running narrative traditions has since gone global. Want to know about the parallels between Celtic and Polynesian language and myth? Start the conversation.

Before consulting, James spent years as an art director and creative director in animation and game design, including work as a commercial animator on shows such as Star Trek: Lower Decks, so he knows how a production actually runs, from the pitch to the final cut. His credits include The Sacrifice Game, Lucid, Look and SuperNatural.
